Pecorino & Passerina
A red wine Drinkers white wine
Red wine, it seems, has stolen all the thunder from its poor white counterpart. You never hear people raving about white wine's health benefits, or how they can't wait to pop open a big, brawny bottle of sauvignon blanc. Red wine, at least here on North Union Street, has become the popular choice, creating hordes of red-only devotees who wouldn't be caught dead sipping a glass of Pecorino or Passerina from the Marche.

Personally, I try to cast my wine net a little wider, and pay equal attention to reds, whites, rosés and bubbles. As an equal-opportunity drinker, I often feel compelled to show red drinkers the light and prove to them that white wine can be so much more than a mouthful of buttery popcorn.

Generally speaking, red wine is easier to love, and easier to understand. It can be sleek and polished, powerful and impressive. White wine requires a bit more investigation and a little patience. White wine is the introspective like a geeky guy who reveals his merits slowly and grows on you over time.

So listen up, red wine drinkers: here are two whites from Italy to try that just might make a convert out of you! If you don't like 'em, then we'll just have to drink them all here at FranksWine... because no no no, we're not wine snobs!

Il Crinale 2012 Offida Pecorino
Regularly Priced at $19.99

The Pecorino grape derived its name from the Italian word pecora, which means sheep. It is said that in the Offida region of the Marche sheep particularly enjoyed eating the grapes while they were being driven out of the vineyards from pasture to pasture. The yields are low but will ripen early and at high altitudes

In the glass this Pecorino from Il Crinale is quite full bodied with a deep, rich, aromatic and nutty character and moderate acidity giving it great balance. On the nose and palate there are flavors and aromas of yellow fruits, spices like ginger and white pepper, and nuts. It leaves a full, weighty, mineral-rich mouthfeel on the long finish. Pecorino wines are best paired with Asian cuisine, grilled fowls, rich salads, seafoods, risotto...
and cheese, of course!

Il Crinale 2013 Marche Passerina
Regularly Priced at $19.99

Passerina is an ancient and traditional variety in the white wines of the Marche wine region of central Italy. Passero is the Italian word for 'sparrow', the bird known to Italian vinegrowers for itsvoracious appetite for ripe Passerina grapes. The grapes ripen with a high level of natural sugars, and have correspondingly high acidity, making for balanced wines.

The Il Crinale Passerina is pretty with its subtly sassy nose of hazelnut, apricot jam, white pepper and citrus peel. On the palate it's fresh and lively, but with a super rich texture and complex with it's evolving flavors of woody herbs, pear and even quinine. I love this wine... there's nothing else like it!
